New Hampshire Disaster Animal Response Team
Information and resources from the New Hampshire Disaster Animal Response Team (NHDART), a all-volunteer organization dedicated to increasing New Hampshire’s capabilities in response to animal disasters on the local, regional, state and federal levels.
NHDART provides a coordinated effort in the preparation, prevention, response and recovery phases for any disasters or significant public emergencies involving animals.

How can I be involved?
We need team members and team leaders willing to:
- care for animals,
- do clerical work, and
- perform support tasks such as inventorying supplies.
Prior animal handling experience is highly recommended, but not required.
What is required of volunteers?
NHDART opens and operates emergency animal shelters for owned and stray pets impacted by fire, flood, hurricanes, and other natural disasters.
- Be over the age of 18.
- Pass a criminal background check.
- Maintain an email account that you regularly check.
- Complete the volunteering for your State Disaster Animal Response Team e-learning module
- Complete the one-day in person Emergency Animal Sheltering class, offered periodically around the State.
- Complete the following virtual FEMA classes within one year:
- Attend quarterly team meetings and trainings
How do I sign up?
- Complete the NH Responds Agreement and choose either NH Disaster Animal Response Team or a local DART organization that is listed.

- Criminal Background Check Form
- Volunteer Waiver of Liability (Coming Soon)
- Submit the Volunteer Application Form to the NH Disaster Animal Response Team at: dhhs.nhresponds@dhhs.nh.gov
