Vaccine Preventable Disease Surveillance
Vaccine Preventable Diseases (VPDs) are conditions caused by bacteria and viruses that can be prevented by vaccines. These diseases can cause long-term illness, hospitalization, and even death. Examples of VPDs are: whooping cough (pertussis), chicken pox (varicella), measles, meningococcal disease, and pneumococcal diseases.
VPD Surveillance Program Objectives
- Monitor for diseases that are prevented by vaccinations
- Detection of outbreaks and new pathogens
- Control the spread of vaccine preventable diseases
- Promote the benefits of vaccination
Who is affected?
VPDs can cause long-term illness, hospitalization, and even death; affecting people of any age.
What is the best way to prevent being infected?
Take precautions to avoid diseases that are prevented by vaccinations by getting vaccinated to protect yourself and unprotected, vulnerable persons.
Facility VPD Reporting Requirements
Any physicians or other health care provider who identifies a VPD must report the diagnosis or suspicion of diagnosis to DHHS.

- Acute Flaccid Myelitis
- Diphtheria (Corynebacterium diphtheriae)*
- Haemophilus influenzae *
- Hepatitis A*, B
- Measles (Rubeola)*
- Mumps*
- Neisseria meningitidis *
- Pertussis (Bordetella pertussis, Whooping Cough)*
- Pneumococcal disease (Streptococcus pneumonia)
