dcyf definitely had my back in every
0:08
case
0:09
situation possible i'm really thankful
0:13
for dcyf and that i was able to be in
0:15
foster care
0:16
because if i had been in my other
0:18
situation i'm not really sure where i'd
0:20
be right now so when you think about
0:22
youth and young adults
0:24
you assume that they have people that
0:26
love them they have parents or whoever
0:28
raised them that are going to be there
0:30
for them you know through thick and thin
0:32
right well think about kids that don't
0:34
have that support whether they've been
0:36
abused or neglected there's problems
0:38
there and where do they go for help well
0:40
a lot of those kids end up working with
0:42
ecyf there's a lot of things about being
0:44
an adult that i don't know
0:46
so it's great that i'm able to call or
0:49
text my former caseworker there's a lot
0:52
of
0:53
resources that were available to me like
0:55
i didn't know how to properly store food
0:58
i'm still learning about like credit and
1:00
budgeting and there was a lot of
1:02
resources helping me learn that and
1:04
before i left foster care which i think
1:06
was great they made sure i had like a
1:09
primary care and adult
1:11
that i could count on when i left so
1:13
like we established a support system
1:15
before i was on my own living on my own
1:18
has proved to be a struggle too i've
1:20
learned how to stand up for myself when
1:22
it comes into situations where i feel
1:24
like i'm being taken advantage of
1:25
whether that be at work or in my
1:27
personal life
1:29
and finally i just started therapy and i
1:31
started learning that it's okay to talk
1:32
about my struggles and like now with the
1:35
strength of mine i can talk about it and
1:37
not feel ashamed of where i came from
1:39
they're trying to figure out you know
1:41
what i'm what am i going to do after
1:42
high school where am i going to live you
1:44
know who are my connections we're right
1:47
there with them supporting them to think
1:49
about you know making the best decisions
1:51
for themselves and providing them with
1:52
resources so they have access to housing
1:54
they can access higher education they
1:56
can have a job they can make those
1:58
connections so they don't feel so alone
2:01
since dcy i've got involved in my life
2:04
i've
2:05
felt safe
2:07
and they've really taught me how to
2:09
advocate for myself i learned how to
2:11
find my voice
2:12
i started off very passive
2:15
angry and passive and
2:17
decy i've helped me find my voice
2:20
i'm not angry i'm not passive i know how
2:22
to be assertive i know how to
2:25
connect with resources and if i don't i
2:28
know how to find the appropriate people
2:29
to help me
2:31
i feel positive i think there's a really
2:33
great future that's lined up for me i'm
2:35
working on getting my human services
2:37
degree from manchester community college
2:40
and i would love to go down the human
2:42
services track whether i become like a
2:45
social worker counselor haven't really
2:47
decided where i'm going with that yet
2:48
but the degree itself can take me in a
2:51
million different directions we're
2:53
leveling the playing field we're making
2:55
it possible for youth that maybe had
2:58
issues for whatever reason making it
3:00
possible for them to have as much
3:01
success and fulfillment as anyone else
3:04
now i feel in control of what happens to
3:07
me before i kind of felt like life was
3:09
just happening to me but now i feel in
3:12
control i feel empowered
3:15
i feel like what happens to myself and
3:17
my son is really up to me
